NORFOLK, VA-The Old Dominion women's basketball team defeated visiting Drexel this afternoon, 74-52. The Lady Monarchs move to 11-5 on the season and remain perfect in the Colonial Athletic Association at 8-0 while Drexel slips to 9-7, 2-5 CAA.
Senior forward Hamchetou Maiga (Bamako, Mali) got things rolling for the Lady Monarchs early in the first half, scoring 12 of her 14 points in the first frame. Old Dominion jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the game's opening minutes and never looked back, taking a comfortable 41-16 lead into the locker room.
Drexel fought back in the second half and made things interesting for a while, as forward Jessica Copskey scored 15 of her game high 17 points, including three treys. It was too little, too late, though, as Old Dominion coasted to yet another league win.
Old Dominion was led by Maiga, who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lucienne Berthieu (Rennes, France) scored 16 points and collected four rebounds in just 21 minutes of work. Reserves Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) and Kim Giddens (Painter, VA) each scored 10 points.
Copskey led all Dragon players with 17 points. Michelle Maslowski scored 16 points with 6 rebounds.
Old Dominion shot .439 for the game and out-rebounded Drexel 57-24. The Lady Monarchs also held a commanding 29-9 edge in offensive rebounds.
Old Dominion will kick off a four game road trip starting at UNC-Wilmington on Thursday, January 24. Dates with James Madison, Rutgers and Towson will follow.
