Newark, DE-The Old Dominion women's basketball team had little trouble with CAA foe Delaware this evening, handing the Blue Hens a 82-55 loss. The Lady Monarchs improve to 8-5 overall, 5-0 CAA, while Delaware falls to 8-4, 2-2 CAA.
The outcome of the game was never in doubt as Old Dominion raced out to an early lead and never looked back. The Lady Monarchs led by as many as 23 in the first half, thanks mainly to the efforts of guard Okeisha Howard (Va. Beach, VA). Howard was perfect from the field in the first stanza, connecting on 7-7 shooting which included two treys.
Overall, the Lady Monarchs shot 61.5% in the first half and went to the locker room up 39-22. Delaware, on the other hand, shot just 22.2% and would continue to stumble after the break.
Old Dominion's dominance in the paint assured no come-back attempt from Delaware. Led by senior Hamchetou Maiga (Bamako, Mali) and Lucienne Berthieu (Rennes, France), the Lady Monarchs controlled the inside game and put up 46 points from close-range shots. Maiga finished with a game high 21 points and nine rebounds while Berthieu put up seven points and nine rebounds.
Howard would finish with 19 for Old Dominion, which won it's 12th straight CAA game.
Delware was led by reserve Julie Sailer, who finished with 16 points and four rebounds.
Old Dominion shot 57.4% for the game and outrebounded Delaware 36-31. The Blue Hens could muster just a 32.7% shooting effort.
The Lady Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, when they travel to George Mason.
