CHARLESTON, S.C. (Feb. 11) -- Senior rightfielder Brennan Dees tied his career highwith five hits including two home runs to lead South Carolina past OldDominion 16-3, in game number eight of the Berkeley Electric CooperativeShootout, in Riley Park.
South Carolina (6-0) was led by Dees' 5-for-5 effort, that included adouble, four runs scored and three RBI. Junior centerfielder Marcus McBethalso added two home runs and three RBI to lead the No. 8 ranked Gamecockson Sunday afternoon. Backup catcher Tim Whitaker also had a busy day atthe plate, going 4-for-4 including three doubles and four RBI.
Old Dominion (0-3) dropped their third straight game, while seniorright-hander J.D. Jackson(Sallissaw,OK.) lost his first decision of theseason, going four innings allowing six earned runs. Offensively, theMonarchs were led by sophomore centerfielder BrentSollenberger(Chambersburg, Pa.) who compiled two hits and two RBI toaccount for 2/3 of the Monarchs scoring. He also had two hits yesterdayagainst The Citadel.
Junior left-hander Gary Bell pitched 6.1 innings allowing only one earnedrun and striking out eight to pick up his second victory of the season.
The Monarchs return for their home opener against Rutgers. The three gameseries begins Friday at 3 p.m. The Scarlet Knights werea number one seed in last years NCAA Tournament.
