Norfolk, VA-The Old Dominion men's basketball team used a strong second-half effort to defeat visiting Coastal Carolina this evening, 81-67. With the win the Monarchs improve to6-2 on the season while the Chanticleers fall to 1-7.

ODU seemed to have things in hand early with a commanding 12 point lead in the first half, but it would prove to be short-lived. Coastal Carolina reeled off nine straight points in the final 1:25 to cut the Monarch lead to 35-32 at the half.

The Chanticleers pushed even harder to open the second stanza and actually took a two-point lead on a Brandon Newby trey at the 18:18 mark. Old Dominion responded with buckets by Clay McGowen (Westerville, OH) and a three-pointer by Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC) to take the lead again. The Monarchs overwhelmed Coastal Carolina from that point, and enjoyed a double-digit cushion throughout the rest of the game.

Old Dominion was guided by Ricardo Marsh (Mebane, NC) who nearly recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore Troy Nance (Va. Beach, VA) put in 18 points to go along with seven assists.

The Chanticleers were paced by guard Brandon Newby, who scored a game-high 25 points.

Old Dominion outshot Coastal Carolina from the floor, .491 to .429, and held a 40-33 edge in rebounding.

Monarch senior Pierre Greene (Chicago, IL) was unable to attend tonight's game due to a death in the family.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday, December 18, when they host Hampton.
