Maiga Leads Lady Monarchs In Exhibition Win

NORFOLK, VA. - Old Dominion University senior Hamchetou Maiga(Bamako, Mali) scored a game high 22 points to lead the 18th ranked Lady Monarchs to a 89-68 exhibition win over Remus Powerbasket (from Austria) Wednesday evening.Five Lady Monarchs were in double figures.

With the score tied at 24 with 9:13 left in the first half, sophomore Monique Coker (Bronx, NY.) hit a layup to put the Lady Monarchs up for good. Old Dominionproceeded to outscore their international visitors 21-15 the rest of the way fora 45-39 halftime lead.

In the second half Maiga scored 12 points as the Lady Monarchs pulledaway, leading by as much as 22, 73-51 with 8:16 left in the game. LucienneBerthieu (Rennes, France) scored ten points and hauled in ten rebounds, whilejunior Max Nhassengo (Maputo, Mozambique) scored 14 points, Kim Giddens(Painter, Va.) 12 and Okiesha Howard (Va. Beach, Va.) ten points. Howardalso came up with five steals.

Remus Powerbasket was led by Samantha Woosnam and Simona Jurse,each with 20 points. Woosnam hauled in nine rebounds. Remus committed 25turnovers and shot .472 from the floor. Old Dominion dominated the boards, haulingin 49 rebounds and shooting .494 from the floor.

Old Dominion returns to action on Nov. 13 against M.I. Express. At 7:35 p.m. intheir final exhibition game of the season.
