NORFOLK, VA -- 2001 CAA Tournament MVP Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) led her Blue Team to victory, 56-51, narrowly missing a double-double performance with a 14-point, nine rebound effort in the Lady Monarchs' annual Blue and White Game held at the Old Dominion Fieldhouse. Senior Sharron Francis (W. Lanham Hills, MD) netted 13 points and added four-steals for the White Team in the Lady Monarchs 2001-02 season debut.
The afternoon marked the return of senior Lucienne Berthieu (Rennes, France), a two-time CAA Player of the Year and 2001 CAA Pre-Season Player of the Year. Berthieu, taking to the court in the Lady Monarch uniform for the first time since the end of the 2000 season totaled 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting in 20 minutes of action for the White Team. The White Team also boasted newcomer Evelina "Max" Nhassengo (Maputo, Mozambique ) who last year was the Junior College Player of the Year. Nhassengo had an impressive debut, needing just one more rebound for a double-double afternoon. The 5-10 junior guard from Central Florida Community College scored 12 points and collected nine boards. Sophomore guard Myriah Spence (Espanola, NM )registered a game-high five steals, while fellow classmate Alli Spence (Lafayette, CO) chipped in a team-high five assists.
For the Blue Team, red-shirt freshman Shareese Grant made her Old Dominion debut. The Virginia Beach native collected eight points and three rebounds. Junior guard Okiesha Howard (Virginia Beach, VA) also registered double digits with 11 points, four steals, and a game-high seven assists.
The Lady Monarch women's basketball team returns to the court in two pre-season tune-ups prior to the start of the 2001-02 regular season. Old Dominion will host the Basketball Travelers on Wednesday, November 7th and MI Express on Tuesday, November 13th. Both games will tip-off at 7:35 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
