Norfolk, VA-The Penn State men's soccer team (#18 SoccerTimes/ #23 NSCAA) scored two second-half goals within a one-minute span to pull away from Old Dominion for a 3-0 win this evening. The Nittany Lions improve to 12-3-1 while the Monarchs drop to 7-6-2.
Penn State's Ricardo Villar put the Lions up 1-0 in the first half when he converted a direct kick from the top of the Old Dominion box. The Monarchs nearly answered moments later when senior midfielder Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY) juked PSU goalie Ryan Stickman out of position and fired a line drive at the goal. Penn State's Jorma Makippa was covering the line, however, and saved the score.
The Nittany Lions put the game away in the second half, taking advantage of defensive confusion near the Monarch goal to put in two insurance scores. Villar took a one touch pass from teammate Ken Lear and scored his second goal of the night at the 59:50 mark, followed by a Kenji Treschuk goal just moments later. Both goals came within 49 seconds of the other.
Penn State held a 8-7 edge in shots and 4-3 advantage in corners. PSU goalie Ryan Sickman made three saves while ODU's Chad Calderone (Rockville Centre, NY) made four.
The Monarchs will close out the regular season on November 10, when they travel to UNC-Wilmington for a potential conference-clinching match-up. ODU's November 6 contest with Virginia Tech was canceled.
