NORFOLK, VA-Old Dominion junior forward Ricardo Marsh (Mebane, NC) scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Monarchs to 55-46 victory over in-state rival Virginia Tech this evening. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 2-1 on the season while the Hokies fall to 2-1.
Both teams played strong defense throughout the first half, and ODU went into the locker room at the half leading 24-19. Virginia Tech would surge ahead 35-33 with just under ten minutes remaining in the game, but it would prove to be short-lived as Old Dominion went on a 10-0 tear. Pierre Greene (Chicago, IL) scored twice and Troy Nance (Va. Beach, VA) buried a long three-pointer during the run, which broke the game open and kept the Monarchs in the lead for good. Old Dominion led 49-39 at the 2:54 mark, and their final points of the game would all come on free throws.
Turnovers and poor shooting plagued the Hokies' all evening. Virginia Tech had 17 turnovers and shot just .298 from the floor. Old Dominion managed to shoot just .328, but committed only nine turnovers.
Marsh led ODU with 21 points and eight rebounds. Senior Pierre Greene and junior Rasheed Wright each chipped in 13 as well.
Virginia Tech was led by guard Carlos Dixon, who put up 18 points in the loss.
Tonight was Old Dominion's final game at the Norfolk Scope, and with the victory the Monarchs improve to 219-90 all-time at the facility. ODU's next home game will be on Monday night when they host Delaware State at the Fieldhouse.
