BLACKSBURG, VA. - Chrystal Starling scored 20 points, hitting 11-12from the free throw line to lead Virginia Tech to a 68-62 victory over 17th rankedOld Dominion University Lady Monarchs Monday night. Virginia Tech is now 2-0,while the Lady Monarchs are 1-1.
Old Dominion shot .377 (23-61) from the field and .478 (11-23) from thefree throw line. The Hokies were 23-34 from the line (.676) for the game and 18-22in the second half. Virginia Tech shot .455 (20-44) from the floor.
Old Dominion had a chance to pull even with the Hokies after cutting a seven-point lead to two with 23 seconds remaining. Sharron Francis' trey trimmed Tech's leadto 64-62, but the Lady Monarchs turned the ball over on their next possession.
Three Lady Monarchs scored in double figures. Sharron Francis (West Lanham Hills, MD.) scored 13, Hamchetou Maiga (Bamako, Mali ) 12 and sophomoreMonique Coker (Bronx, NY.) added ten off the bench. Lucienne Berthieu (Rennes,France) scored nine points and hauled in eight rebounds. The lost was Old Dominion'sfirst in Blacksburg in nine games.
Old Dominion returns to action Friday night in Richmond, Va., when theytake on CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m.
