NORFOLK, VA -- Lady Monarch red-shirt freshman Corrina Turner (Miami, FL) will sit out the 2001-2002 basketball season after suffering a knee injury during a pick-up game. A MRI performed confirmed that Turner has torn her ACL on the same knee that caused her to sit out most of the 2000-2001 season.
"There is a long list of 'too bads' in this particular situation," said Old Dominion women's basketball head coach Wendy Larry. "On the top of that list is the fact that Corrina will not have an opportunity to play and compete after a year of hard work and dedication. The team is going to sorely miss her contributions on the court. Corrina had an excellent European tour this past summer."
Turner averaged 9.8 points per game during her return to the court on the Lady Monarch's trip to Italy in last August. Last season she appeared in just six games averaging 10.2 points and 5.7 rebounds before suffering the season-ending injury. The 6-6 center had logged two double-doubles and netted a career-high 21 points against North Carolina. Prior to arriving at Old Dominion, Turner averaged 22.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 8.5 blocks per contest as an All-State athlete at Monsignor Edward Pace High School.
The Old Dominion women's basketball team opens the year with its annual Blue and White Scrimmage on Saturday, November 3rd. The Lady Monarchs will take to the court in two exhibition games at the fieldhouse before opening the 2001-2002 season against new conference member Towson on Friday, November 16th at 7:35 p.m.
