Lady Monarchs Cruise to 67-51 CAA Victory over East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. (Jan. 21, 2001) -- Sophomore forward Kim Giddens (Painter, Va.) scored a game-high 16 points while senior swing player Hamchetou Maiga (Bamako, Mali) added 11 and a team-leading six rebounds to lead Old Dominion to its 25th consecutive victory over East Carolina, 67-51, Sunday afternoon at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, NC.

With the win, Old Dominion improves to 9-5 overall and 5-0 in the CAA, taking sole possession of first place in the conference and snapping East Carolina's four game win streak. The Lady Pirates fall to 9-7 overall/4-1 CAA.

The Lady Monarchs held East Carolina to a season-low 16 points in the first half on 7 of 27 shooting (.259). The Lady Monarchs opened up an early lead and trailed just once, pulling away to a 12-point lead at halftime. A balanced scoring attack saw Giddens, Maiga, Alli Spence (Lafayette, Colo.), and Tiffany Thompson (Clinton, Md.) collect six points apiece in the first 20 minutes. Leading 17-15, the Lady Monarchs held East Carolina scoreless for a stretch of 7:22 in the first half.

In the second half, the Lady Monarchs led by as many as 18 points. Giddens collected 10 of her 16 points in the second stanza while freshman forward Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) tossed in all of her eight points in the second half. The Lady Monarchs connected on six of their 15 three-pointers, just one game after going 1-of-16 from behind the arc.

East Carolina was led by Christal Avery, who had 14 points, while Courtney Willis and Roc Canady had 10 points each.

The Lady Monarchs shot .431 (22-51) from the floor en route to its 107th straight conference victory. Old Dominion will try to defend its 79 consecutive CAA home game win streak in the Fieldhouse Wednesday as they host Va. Commonwealth.
