WILMINGTON, NC (April 6, 2001) -- Old Dominion fell to UNC-Wilmington this evening, 4-2. The loss drops Old Dominion to 14-20 overall, 5-5 CAA. The Seahawks improve to 23-13, 5-4 CAA.
The Monarchs lost despite solid pitching performances by Shawn Weaver and John Tinkham, who combined to throw a two-hit game. Weaver pitched 4 1/3 innings without giving up a hit, surrendering just two earned runs.
Tinkham provided the relief, covering the rest of the game and yielding two hits and no runs.
UNCW took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the third when Jamie Hemingway drew a one out walk and came all the way home on Monarch third baseman Jeff Eure's throwing error. Old Dominion would come back to tie the game in the fifth inning with an Allen Strick homer, but it would prove to be short-lived as Weaver ran into trouble, walking one and hitting two batters.
A ground-out to first brought home one run and a balk brought home the second run of the inning, bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of Wilmington.
Monarch centerfielder Matt Moye went 3 for 4 with one rbi, and third baseman Jeff Eure finished 2 for 4. Freshman shortstop Allen Strick went 1 for 4 with a home run.
Seahawk pitcher Charlie Weatherby hurled his fourth straight complete game in-conference, bringing his record to 7-3.
The Monarchs will play UNCW again tomorrow before wrapping up their series on Sunday.
