JEFF CAPEL-HEAD COACH: (Fayetteville State '77)..Is in his seventh year at the helm of the Monarchs. He is 200-161 in his 12th overall season and 121-96 at Old Dominion. Capel was the 1995 CAA and NABC District IV Coach of the Year. In 1997 he was named Coach of the Year in the State of Virginia (VASID). He won his 100th collegiate victory in the Monarchs 89-81 triple overtime victory over ninth ranked Villanova in the 1995 NCAA first round. Capel was 16-14 in 1994 at NC A&T, losing in the NCAA first round to Arkansas. He compiled a 63-51 mark at his Alma mater, Fayetteville State, taking the Broncos to the NCAA Div. II regionals in 1993. Capel was inducted into the Fayetteville State University Hall of Fame in 1999. His Monarch teams have reached the CAA finals three times, winning in 1995 and 1997. Capel's 200th win was against GMU on Feb.21.

SERIES VS. William & Mary: ODU leads, 44-12. The two teams split games this year. The Monarchs won on Jan. 10 in Scope, 74-54. Andre McCullum led with a career high tying 29 points and Pierre Greene added 18. ODU shot .511 from the floor and forced the Tribe to 26 turnovers (16 in the first half). W&M shot .733 in the first half (11-15) from the field.

In the second game on Feb. 17 at W&M Hall the Tribe won 72-62. Four players scored in double figures for the Tribe. ODU was led by Ricardo Marsh with 17 points and Troy Nance added 12. ODU shot .370 from the floor, while the Tribe shot .605.

THIS DAY IN OLD DOMINION BASKETBALL HISTORY:
March 3, 1997- Odell Hodge scored 16 points, Mike Byers 14 and Brion Dunlap 12 to lead the Monarchs to a 62-58 overtime win over James Madison in the CAA title game. The Monarchs advanced to the NCAA Tournament to play New Mexico in Pittsburgh.

March 4, 1995- Old Dominion defeated George Mason, 110-94 as Mario Mullen scored 31 points and David Harvey hauled in ten rebounds.....In 1989 Chris Gatling scored 36 points(23 in the second half and 6 in overtime), but the Monarchs lost to UAB, in the Sun Belt Semi-Finals, 89-87. March 5, 1977 - After beating Georgetown, 80-58 for the ECAC South title, the Monarchs hosted Syracuse for the ECAC North-South crown in Scope. The Orangemen defeated the Monarchs, 67-64 despite 20 points from Ronnie Valentine and 15 points and 15 rebounds from Wilson Washington.

MONARCH HIGHLIGHTS THIS YEAR:

ab Andre McCullum became the 38th Monarch to go over the 1,000 career point mark when he did it against East Carolina on Jan. 30. ab Rasheed Wright hit 31 straight free throws from Feb. 7 to Feb. 26. The school record is 33 set in 1992 by Donald Anderson.

(18.3 ppg/ 9.2 rpg) ab.Alan Trese, 6-8, 200,Rutherford Hayes High School, Delaware, Ohio 12.5 ppg/8.3 rpg solid three-point shooter. abT.J. Waldon, 6-5, 200 Kathleen High School, Lakeland, Fla. 17.8 ppg/ 10.4 rpg All-State selection in Florida. His brother plays for South Florida.

SCHOOL OF CHAMPIONS: Old Dominion's field hockey squad captured their ninth NCAA title with a 3-1 victory over North Carolina. Led by four-time CAA Player of the Year Marina DiGiacomo who scored an NCAA record 167 career goals and 414 career points. DiGiacomo also was named the Honda Award winner for that sport, the school's fifth field hockey player to do so. The University's athletic teams have won 28 National Titles (24 team titles, sailing 11, field hockey 9, women's basketball 3, men's basketball 1), Three wrestling individual NCAA Div. II titles, and one Women's Individual Tennis title.

SPEAKING OF TENNIS: Women's freshman sensation Nataly Cahana is currently ranked number four nationally. She and her doubles partner Anna Radeljevik are ranked 20th nationally.
