ODU Women Trounce Tribe, 78-32

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Feb. 22) -- A trio of Old Dominion players recorded double-figures leading the Lady Monarchs to a 78-32 victory over the William & Mary Tribe, Thursday evening in a Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball game at W&M Hall.

Freshman Monique Coker lead all scorers with 16 points and nine rebounds, senior Hamchetou Maiga added 15 and six assists, and sophomore Okeisha Howard chipped in 15 points as ODU rebounded from its first CAA loss in nearly six years last Sunday. The loss to James Madison (49-48) ended the Lady Monarchs 113-game winning streak dating back to Feb. 19, 1995.

ODU improves to 16-8 overall and 12-1 in the CAA, while the Tribe suffered its third straight loss falling to 8-16 and 4-9 in conference play.

Both teams were slow out of the gate in the early stages of the contest with ODU building a 17-10 advantage through the first 13 minutes. The game suddenly turned thereafter when the Lady Monarchs finished the half on a 21-5 run, capitalizing on eight W&M turnovers.

In the second half, ODU picked up where they left off limiting the Tribe to two points through the first 10 minutes of the half en route a 60-17 margin. ODU shot 55 percent from the field (33-for-60) and out-rebounded William & Mary, 46-34. The Green & Gold shot a season-low 19.6 percent from the field (11-for-56) and were led in the scoring column by junior Quintina Walker (Upper Marlboro, MD) with nine points and freshman Megan Baier (Sylvania, OH) with eight.

The night did see history for ODU's Hamchetou Maiga, who reached the 1,000-point plateau of her four-year career (1,009 points).
