NORFOLK, Va. (Feb. 18) -- Val Majewski's run scoring single followed by Billy McCarthy's two-run homer in the tenth inning lifted the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers to a 5-3 non conference win over Old Dominion Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights are now 3-0, ODU drops to 0-6.
The Monarchs broke the scoreless duel between Mike Hoover (Gloucester, Va,.) And Tom Wheeler in the fourth on the first collegiate homer by freshman Mark Michael (Gobbstown, NJ.). ODU added a second run in the sixth on an rbi single by freshman Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, Md.) which plated Jesse Thomas (Ventnor, Pa.).
Rutgers came back in the ninth to tie the game on a two run single by Ryan Lillis, scoring Billy McCarthy and Graig Badger. In the top of the tenth, Matt Wolski reached on an error, then scored on Majewski's single. Majewski then scored when McCarthy followed with his first home run of the season.
ODU's final run came in the tenth as Allen Strick singled home John Oehler Audubon, NJ).
Monarch sophomore righthander Mike Hoover pitched six plus innings fanning seven and held Rutgers hitless until the fifth inning. In two outings this year Hoover has a 1.59 earned run average and no decision.
Three Monarchs, Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, Va.), Strick and Michael each had two hits on the day. The Monarchs return to action Friday in Wilmington, North Carolina for the UNCW Baseball Challenge. ODU will open the three-game tournament with West Virginia at 11 am on Friday.
