NORFOLK, Va. (Feb. 16) -- Matt Wolski and Mike Popowski had run scoring singles in the ninth to lead the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers to a 5-3 victory over the Monarchs of Old Dominion Friday afternoon. ODU is now 0-4, Rutgers is 1-0.
Old Dominion jumped out to a 3-0 lead as junior Jeff Eure (Pillow, Pa.) doubled in David Vilardi (Fishkill, NY.) And Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, Va.). Eure then scored on a single by John Oehler (Audubo, NJ.).
Rutgers came back in the fifth when Val Majewski hit a two-out three run homer off Parker Friske (Va. Beach, Va.) to tie the score at three. The game stayed that way until Rutgers scored the two runs in the ninth.
ODU loaded the bases in the eighth as Vilardi was hit by a pitch from Ryan Molchan, the Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, Pa.) singled and Oehler was walked by Eric Brown, but Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, Md.) Flied out to center to end the inning.
Old Dominion and Rutgers play game two of the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
