CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Sophomore left-hander Eric Talbert pitched six inningsallowing only one earned run, while striking out seven to lead The Citadelpast Old Dominion, 6-2, in game number six of the Berkeley ElectricCooperative Shootout, in Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park, on Saturday evening.
Old Dominion (0-2) jumped on the Bulldogs in the top of the first whenjunior designated hitter David Vilardi scored on a fielder's choice to putthe Monarchs ahead 1-0. Old Dominion posted one more run in the third whensophomore centerfielder Brent Sollenberger doubled in his second RBI ofthe game.
The Citadel (2-3) responded in a hurry in the bottom of the first as juniordesignated hitter Dallas McPherson drilled a solo home run over the leftfield scoreboard. The Bulldogs added another in the fifth, when seniorfirst baseman Philip Hartig drove in sophomore centerfielder Andy Phillipsto tie the game at two. McPherson, then responded with two more RBI in theseventh as he doubled home senior left fielder Daryl Byrd and Phillips togive the Bulldogs the lead for good.
Junior reliever John Pollock picked up his first collegiate win, whilehurling 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Old Dominion reliever ParkerFriske took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. Junior reliever RandyCorn picked up his second save in as many days, while going 1.1 innings andstriking out three to shut down the Monarchs.
Old Dominion returns tomorrow afternoon to take on the University of SouthCarolina at 1:30 pm, while The Bulldogs take on the Rams of VirginiaCommonwealth at 5 pm.
