NORFOLK, VA. (August 17, 2000) -- The 2000-01 Old Dominion University men's basketball schedule will have first time home dates with North Carolina State and Kansas State and a first ever meeting against Stanford of the Pac-10 as released by athletic director Jim Jarrett.
The Monarchs will host North Carolina State on Saturday Dec. 2 and the Wildcats of Kansas State on Saturday Dec. 9. Old Dominion will play the Cardinal of Stanford in the first round of the Puerto Rico Shootout on Thanksgiving day, Nov. 23. Other teams participating in the eight team tournament, Nov. 23-25 are Utah Mountain West), Memphis (Conference USA), Georgia (SEC), Indiana State (Missouri Valley), and Miami of Ohio (Mid American). N.C. State reached the NIT semi-finals while Stanford was a number one seed in last year's NCAA Tournament.
"The men's schedule will provide quality games and significant challenges during the season, "said Jarrett. "The home schedule includes some exciting match ups for the fans and supporters of the Monarchs. With games against N.C. State, Kansas State, the CAA games, the Norfolk State rivalry, opening the San Juan Shootout with Stanford, and games at Dayton, St. Joseph's, George Washington culminating with the CAA Tournament in March gives us a lot to be excited about for the coming season. Construction has started on the Constant Center and I look forward to its completion in the year 2002. In the interim, we are pleased to have both Scope and the fieldhouse available for our games."
Also on the Monarchs schedule are road games at Atlantic-10 schools St. Joseph, George Washington and Dayton, coached by Monarch alumnus, Oliver Purnell. The Monarchs travel to Chicago, IL. for the first time since 1987 to play Illinois-Chicago (Mid Continent) on Dec. 21. It is the first meeting between the two schools. Old Dominion will also play crosstown rival Norfolk State on Jan. 25 in a neutral site contest at Scope.
Dayton returns to the Old Dominion schedule on Dec. 19 for the first time since 1984-85, with the Monarchs winning that contest, 91-82. The Monarchs first road game of the season is Nov. 20 at George Washington. After returning from Puerto Rico, the Monarchs travel to Philadelphia to play St. Joseph's on Nov. 29.
Old Dominion opens the CAA season on Dec. 6 at Richmond. The first home CAA game is against James Madison on Jan.3rd. The CAA Championships will be in Richmond, Va., March 3-5 at the Coliseum.
"This could be the most challenging schedule since I have been at Old Dominion," said Jeff Capel. "We play some of the nation's top programs whose styles contrast greatly. This schedule will better prepare us for the conference season."
The Monarchs return four starters from last year's squad led by 6-6 senior forward and second team All-CAA performer, Andre McCullum (12.9 ppg/ 7.0 rpg); 6-0 senior guard Michael Williams (10.1 ppg); 6-7 sophomore forward and CAA All-Rookie selection Ricardo Marsh (5.6 ppg/ 4.0 rpg) and 6-2 junior Pierre Greene (6.0 ppg/2.4 apg).
Other returnees include 6-4 senior Heath Burris (1.5 ppg); 6-7 senior forward Clifton Jones (6.0 ppg/5.1 rpg); 6-9 junior center Aron McMillian (1.7 ppg/2.2 rpg); and 6-5 sophomore forward Rasheed Wright (2.6 ppg); along with freshmen 6-9 Charles Dunnington and 6-9 Joe Principe who both redshirted last year.
Capel and his staff have four newcomers to the squad in 6-0 guard Darren Dickerson (20.4 ppg/5.1 apg) from Laney High in Wilmington, NC; 6-11 Clay McGowen (13.1 ppg/9.5 rpg) from North High in Westerville, Ohio; 5-10 Troy Nance (13.3 ppg/9.1 apg) from Cape Henry Collegiate and 6-4 guard John Waller (26.4 ppg/8.2 rpg) from Highland Springs High in Richmond, Va.
