ODU lost at George Washington Monday night, 91-89. PierreGreene led with 21 points and Rasheed Wright added 19 points. Clifton Jonesled ODU with ten rebounds. With 4:55 left in the game, GW led 78-56. ODU went on a33-13 run to cut the lead to the final margin. FIRST GAME: The Monarchs opened theseason with an 84-57 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday night. Twelve differentMonarchs scored led by Pierre Greene with 14 points and four assists, Andre McCullumwith 12 points and Michael Williams with ten.Rasheed Wright hauled in a career high11 rebounds. The Monarchs started two freshman in Joe Principe (red shirt last year)and true freshman Troy Nance.

JEFF CAPEL-HEAD COACH:
(Fayetteville State '77), is in his seventhyear at the helm of the Monarchs. He is 189-146 in his12th season and 110-81 atOld Dominion. Capel was the1995 CAA and NABC District IV Coach of the Year. In1997 he was named Virginia College Coach of the Year. He won his 100thcollegiate victory in the Monarchs 89-81 triple overtime win over ninth ranked Villanova in the1995 NCAA Tournament. Capel was 16-14 in 1994 at NCA&T, losing in the NCAAfirst round to Arkansas. He compiled a 63-51 mark at his alma mater, FayettevilleState, taking the Broncos to the NCAA Div. II regionals in 1993. Capel was inductedinto the Fayetteville State University Hall of Fame in 1999. His Monarch teamshave reached the CAA finals three times, winning twice.

On Jan. 10, 1981, ODU defeated unbeated and #1 ranked DePaul in theHorizon in Chicago, 63-62. It was DePaul's first loss in that building.

This is the Monarchs third trip to San Juan,Puerto Rico. In 1990-91, the Monarchs opened this tournament with a win over NorthIowa, 63-61, then lost to Murray State, 76-61 and Illinois, 80-62.

In the 1996-97 Xmas Tournament, ODU lost to Nebraska, 72-66, thendefeated SE Missouri State 74-61 and Mississippi State, 72-71 in overtime.

EXHIBITION GAMES:
Old Dominion split their two exhibition games.Defeating Court Authority, 87-85 and losing to Global Sports, 91-82. In theCourt Authority win Pierre Greene led with 23 points, while Andre McCullum hauled innine rebounds.

In the loss to Global Sports, McCullum scored 25 points and freshmanCharles Dunnington grabbed 12 rebounds.
