LAST GAME: The Monarchs opened the season with an 84-57 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday night. Twelve different Monarchs scored led by Pierre Greene with 14 points and four assists, Andre McCullum with 12 points and Michael Williams with ten. Rasheed Wright hauled in a career high 11 rebounds. The Monarchs started two freshman in Joe Principe (red shirt last year) and true freshman Troy Nance.

JEFF CAPEL-HEAD COACH: (Fayetteville State '77), is in his seventh year at the helm of the Monarchs. He is 189-145 in his12th season and 110-80 at Old Dominion. Capel was the 1995 CAA and NABC District IV Coach of the Year. In 1997 he was named Virginia College Coach of the Year. He won his 100th collegiate victory in the Monarchs 89-81 triple overtime win over ninth ranked Villanova in the 1995 NCAA Tournament. Capel was 16-14 in 1994 at NCA&T, losing in the NCAA first round to Arkansas. He compiled a 63-51 mark at his alma mater, Fayetteville State, taking the Broncos to the NCAA Div. II regionals in 1993. Capel was inducted into the Fayetteville State University Hall of Fame in 1999. His Monarch teams have reached the CAA finals three times, winning twice.

SERIES VS. GW: GW leads, 6-3. Last year, Old Dominion defeated the Colonials, 82-75. Pierre Greene scored 18 points and Andre McCullum added ten points and 11 boards. ODU's last win in the Smith Center was an 86-85 win in 1991-92 season.

Since Moving to Division I in 1976-77, ODU is 13-11.Last year, ODU lost at N.C. State, 75-61.

EXHIBITION GAMES: Old Dominion split their two exhibition games. Defeating Court Authority, 87-85 and losing to Global Sports, 91-82. In the Court Authority win Pierre Greene led with 23 points, while Andre McCullum hauled in nine rebounds. In the loss to Global Sports, McCullum scored 25 points and freshman Charles Dunnington grabbed 12 rebounds.

This year's CAA Tournament will be March 3-5 at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va. The finals will be live on Monday night, March 5 on ESPN2.
