NORFOLK, Va. (Nov. 16) -- Old Dominion University Head Basketball Coach Jeff Capel announced today the signing of three recruits for the 2001-02 season. Alan Treese (Delaware, Ohio), James Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) and T.J. Waldon have signed letters-of-intent.
Smith, a 6-7 forward at nearby Cape Henry Collegiate High School is a two-time All-Tidewater selection. He averaged 18.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game last year. Smith and Monarchs current freshman guard Troy Nance were teammates at Cape Henry Collegiate and helped lead the team to a 26-4 record and the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools Championship.
Treese, a 6-8, 200 pounder with three-point shooting range, averaged 12.5 points and 8.3 rebounds for Rutherford Hayes High School. Waldon, 6-5, 200-pounds, is an all-state performer who averaged 17.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game at Kathleen High School in Lakeland, Fla.
"This is a very strong class, headed by James Smith, who is an outstanding player, " said Capel. " He tough, athletic and very competitive. He reminds me of Petey Sessoms (ODU '95). I think all three will be impact players for us next year. Waldon is a very athletic 6-5, lefthanded perimeter player. Treese reminds me a lot of Mark Poag. Although he played center for his high school team, he is an outstanding shooter."
The three signees complete the Monarchs recruiting for this season.
