Men's Soccer Surprises George Mason, 4-2

Norfolk, VA (Sept. 30) - Freshman Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) and junior Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY) scored two goals each in the first half to lead the Monarchs past CAA rival George Mason, 4-2, on Sept. 30. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 3-4-1 overall, 1-0 CAA. The Patriots fall to 6-3, 1-1 CAA.

Old Dominion jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead courtesy of Vendegh and Mendes, who received help on their goals from Chad Denton (Va. Beach, VA) and Brandon Baker (Parker, CO). The Monarchs would then withstand an early second-half rally from the Patriots when Eduardo Lima and Rob Klug each scored within a two minute span to cut the lead to 4-2. George Mason could get no closer, however, as

Monarch goalkeeper Sam Cameron (Raleigh, NC) recorded three late saves to preserve the win.

Patriot Eduardo Lima found his way into the record books for Mason with his goal tonight. The senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is the first player in GMU history to record four seasons with ten goals or more. Tonight also marks the sixth straight game in which he has recorded a goal, just one shy of the Patriot record books.

The Monarchs will return to action on Oct. 4, when they travel to East Carolina for another CAA contest.
