NORFOLK, VA (Sept. 17, 2000) -- The Old Dominion men's soccer team received three goals from three different players to defeat Georgetown in overtime this afternoon. With the win, Old Dominion captured second place in the Stihl Soccer Classic and improves to 2-2-1 on the season. The Hoyas fall to 4-1.
Earlier in the day, Princeton junior Mike Nugent scored two goals to secure a 2-1 win over William & Mary. Freshman Phillip Hucles scored the only goal of the day for the Tribe, who falls to 2-3 on the season. Princeton, the Stihl Tournament Champions, remain undefeated at 3-0.
For the game, the Tribe outshot the Tigers 10-4 and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Princeton goalkeeper Jason White had two saves in the victory.
Against Georgetown, the Monarchs scored two goals in the first 13 minutes courtesy of freshman Jared Kent (Marietta, GA) and junior Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY). Hoya junior Kenny Owens would even the game with a goal at 74:16 in the second half, and the game went into overtime tied at 2-2. Monarch freshman Chad Denton (Virginia Beach, VA) scored the game winner at 6:21 of the first overtime period.
Old Dominion held a 15-7 advantage in shots but were behind in corners, 5-7. Senior Matt Landman (Beverly, MA) had five saves in the net for the Monarchs.
The Monarchs will return to action on Saturday, September 23 when they host Liberty.
