John Hill
Assistant Coach
John Hill enters his first season as assistant coach to the men's and women's programs at Old Dominion. Although new to Old Dominion, Hill is no stranger to the Hampton Roads area. While attending Granby High School in Norfolk, Hill captured the state high school singles title in 1972 before taking his game to college.
Competing first at the University of Cincinnati and then at Wake Forest, Hill quickly established himself as a top player. During his three years at Wake Forest, Hill played singles at both number 1 and 2 singles, and won the ACC Championship at number 1 doubles.
As a professional, Hill continued to enjoy success. While playing in a satellite tournament, he won events in Ottawa, Canada, and Nice, France. As a touring pro for the Van Der Meer Tennis Center, Hill traveled to locales such as Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong to conduct junior clinics and certify tennis professionals.
For his hard work and success, he was named director of the Van Der Meer Training Center in 1986 and stayed at his post until 1988, when he was named as Director of Tennis at Brandermill Country Club and East West Partners in Midlothian, Virginia. During his six-year stint as director, Hill was honored with numerous awards, including USPTR Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year ('92), and USPTR Worldwide Coach of the Year. Hill is currently the coach of Jessica Steck, who is ranked 140 in Singles and 75 in Doubles by the WTA.
The Norfolk native graduated from Wake Forest in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education.
