Old Dominion, returning a solid core of talent from last season's CAA regular season championship team, faced off against CAA-foe and NCAA Tournament participant VCU in the first game of the tournament. Sophomore midfielder Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY) scored the lone goal of the game, a 35 yard free kick, while the Monarch defense did the rest, as Old Dominion secured the 1-0 victory.
In the second game of the tournament, the Monarchs fought to a 0-0 tie against UMBC, also a 1999 NCAA Tournament participant. With a win and a tie, the Monarchs advanced to the finals against another CAA-rival, Richmond.
Against Richmond, the Monarchs used goals by Tommy Barnicle (Liverpool, England) and Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) to take a 2-0 lead, while sophomore keeper Rob Johnson (Virginia Beach, VA) and the Old Dominion defense locked up the game and their third shutout of the tourney.
The Monarchs continue their spring tour as they take on Virginia on April 6th, before heading to Jacksonville, NC, to participate in another collegiate tourney on April 9th.
