Monarchs Defeat Maryland, 12-5 In Baseball

CHARLESTON, SC. (Feb. 12) -- Junior pre-season All-American shortstop Tim Hummel(Montgomery, NY.) went two-for-three with a double, home run and four RBI as theMonarchs of Old Dominion defeated Maryland, 12-5 in the second round of theCitadel Trademark Classic.

ODU improves to 1-1, while the Terrapins fall to 0-2.The Monarchs will play N.C. State Feb. 13 in the third and final round. Game timeis 1:30 p.m.

Hummel put the Monarchs on top, 1-0 in the first inningwith a solo home run. ODU made it 2-0 in the third when RossRobertson (Chesapeake, Va.)singled and later scored on a groundout by senior JoeTroilo. After Maryland took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third with the helpof a two-run double by Jason Mohap, the Monarchs scored nine runs in the nextthree frames. Hummel had a three-run double in the sixth inning.

Monarch starter and winning pitcher Shawn Weaver (Loganton, Pa.)hurled sixcomplete innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs while walking threeand striking out seven.

Sophomore thirdbaseman Jeff Eure(Pillow, NJ.) collected three hits while JoeTroilo(Avondale, PA.) added three RBI.
