No. 16 Men's Soccer Tops UNCW, 3-1

NORFOLK, Va. - (Nov. 7) Old Dominion senior forward Jimmy Tanner (Syracuse, NY) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the 16th-ranked Monarchs to a 3-1 victory over UNC Wilmington and their first-ever CAA regular season crown Sunday. Old Dominion closes the regular season at 14-3-0, 7-1-0 in the CAA, while UNC Wilmington drops to 7-10-1, 1-7-0 in the CAA.

Tanner put the Monarchs on the board in the 13th minute, taking a Phil Coates (Newcastle, England) assist and depositing it into the back of the net from eight yards out. However, in the 28th minute, Wilmington defender Tommy Miller scored on a header off Ilia Palouykov's corner kick to even the game at 1-1.

Monarch junior forward Tommy Barnicle (Liverpool, England) then made it 2-1 ODU on a 10 yard blast off the right side with just two seconds remaining in the first half. His assists came from freshman midfielder Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) and Tanner.

With the score 2-1, Tanner again lit up the board on an unassisted blast in the 73rd minute, his 18th strike of the season. With the goal, Tanner moved into second-place all-time in Monarch history with 75 career points and sealed the victory.

The Monarch defense held UNCW to just one shot in the second half, while the ODU offense managed 10 of its own. The win assures Old Dominion its first-ever #1 seed going into next week's CAA Tournament at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Old Dominion will play the winner of the #8/#9 play-in game on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.
