CHARLESTON, SC (OCt. 30) - Junior defender Mabricio Wilson (Baldwin, NY) scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute to seal the 16th-ranked Monarchs victory over College of Charleston, 3-2, in the opening game of the Nike Town College of Charleston Tournament. Senior forward Jimmy Tanner (Syracuse, NY) and junior forward Tommy Barnicle (Liverpool, England) also connected for the Monarchs.
Tanner put the Monarchs on the board in only the second minute of play as he blasted his 16th goal of the season in off a Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) assist. The Cougars rallied to tie the game in the seventh minute as forward Vladimir Suite scored an unassisted goal.
At halftime, the scored was knotted 1-1, with Charleston holding the advantage in shots 4-2. But in the second half, the Monarchs offense started to click.
At the 76:43 mark, Barnicle connected on his first career goal, with assists from Tanner and Tooley, to put the Monarchs up 2-1. Wilson?s goal later made it 3-1 in the 83rd minute as he scored on a through ball from sophomore midfielder Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY).
Old Dominion surrendered a goal just a minute later as Suite knocked in his second of the game on the only C of C shot in the second half, this time off a Jason Dowiak assist. The Monarch defense shut down the Cougars over the final six minutes to earn the team its 12th win of the season.
The Monarchs return to action tomorrow as they play South Carolina at 12 noon.
