UNC Wilmington Downs Lady Monarchs, 1-0, in Women's Soccer

NORFOLK, Va. - (Oct. 8) Sophomore forward Michelle Doherty scored the game- winning goal in the 79th minute to lead UNC Wilmington to a 1-0victory over the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs. With the win, UNCW stays undefeated in theCAA at 4-0-0 and 9-1-1 overall while Old Dominion drops to 0-4-0 in the CAA, 5-6-0overall.

Both teams played physically throughout the game and had severalscoring chances before Doherty's goal was scored from five yards out at 78:30. OldDominion sophomore forward Jen Henley (Chalfont, PA) had at least four scoringchances, hitting the crossbar twice and firing two shots that sailed high overthe goal by just inches.

Old Dominion held the advantage in shots on goal, 16-10, as bothteams had four corners. UNCW goalkeeper Meghan Fitzsimmons recorded five saves inthe net.

The Lady Monarchs, losers of three straight, have lost all six oftheir games by one goal deficits. Old Dominion returns to action on Tuesday, October 12, asthey host Virginia Commonwealth at 7:30 pm at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium.
