No. 7 Lady Monarchs Drop No. 6 Virginia, 3-2 in OT

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (Sept. 25) - Junior forward Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina) scored at the 1:16 mark in the first overtime to lead seventh-ranked Old Dominion to a 3-2 upset over sixth-ranked Virginia today. The Lady Monarchs improve to 7-3 overall with the victory.

Old Dominion jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half as seniorforward Kim Miller (Virginia Beach, VA) put the Lady Monarchs on the board with a goalat the 13:17 mark. DiGiacomo later added her first goal of the game at 7:25 on apenalty stroke.

Virginia rallied in the second half as Jessica Coleman cut thedeficit in half at 12:26 with a goal. Virginia later tied the game at 2-2 at the 5:11 mark as Meredith Elwell found the net.

The game was knotted up 2-2 at the end of regulation. But, at 1:16in the first overtime period, DiGiacomo blasted her second goal of the game, with theassist by Miller, on a penalty corner to give Old Dominion the upset win.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Saturday, October, 2, as theyhost Boston University at 2:00 pm at Foreman Field.
