Cal Downs Monarchs, In Overtime, In Stihl Soccer Classic

NORFOLK, VA -- Freshman Jason Thorpe blasted the game-winning goalin the 98th minute to lead California-Berkeley over Old Dominion, 2-1 inovertime, in the second game of the ODU Stihl Soccer Classic. The Monarchs held a 1-0lead for 80 minutes before the Bears rallied for the tying goal.

Old Dominion freshman midfielder Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) scoredin the 12th minute of the first half off a short pass by freshman GiovonniSolorzano (Irving, TX) to put the Monarchs up 1-0. Old Dominion would protect that lead untilthe 80th minute when Cal was awarded a penalty kick after a Monarch foul inside thebox.

Ramiro Arredondo took the penalty kick and blasted it just pastgoalkeeper Chuck Connelly (Rockville, MD) to tie the game 1-1. The Bears carried themomentum into overtime and Thorpe scored the game-winner at the 98:00 mark offChris Roner's assist.

The Monarchs fall to 2-1-0 on the season as the Bears move to 2-0-1.Both teams return to action on Sunday as Old Dominion hosts Virginia Tech at 2:30 pmand the Bears take on William and Mary at 12 noon.
