Hilbrand graduated from Old Dominion with a degree in marketing in 1993. While at Old Dominion, Hilbrand was two-time First Team All American in 1991 and 1992 and a three time National Champion in 1988, 1991, and 1992. She also helped lead the team as runner up in 1989. In her four year career, the Monarchs claimed a record of 101-3. 

Maaike Hilbrand is known as one of the most prolific offensive players in Division I field hockey history. Hilbrand still appears in the Old Dominion Record Book where she is tied for the career goals record with Marina Di Giacomo at 167. Di Giacomo is only the second player in Old Dominion history to reach that many goals. Hilbrand is also second in career points for Old Dominion field hockey history, falling behind Di Giacomo.

Hilbrand led the country in goals scored and total points all four years of her career. She still holds 4 of the top-20 goal-scoring seasons in Division I history.

Hilbrand passed away June 1 of 2021.
