POINT CLEAR, Ala. – Old Dominion Women's Golf saw its run in the Sun Belt Championship come to an end as the Monarchs fell 3-0 in match play to top-seeded Texas State on Thursday morning.
"We played really well and I am surprised we are not playing in the final match now," said ODU Head Coach Mallory Kane. "Texas State needed some lucky bounces to beat us. Having it come down to just one hole is a tough way to go out but I'm confident we will be back next year. The players we have returning, combined with our newcomers, will be a special group to coach."
Klara Wildhaber and Texas State's Junia Gabasa were the first group to finish play. Tied through the first four holes, Wildhaber won the fifth and seventh holes to take the lead by two at the turn. Gabasa then captured six straight holes on the back nine to secure the first point for the Bobcats at 4 & 3.
The next match to wrap up was between Carley Rudolf and Matilda Svahn. Trailing by two after 12 holes played, Rudolf edged her opponent on holes 13 and 14 to pull even. The pair were still knotted up heading into the 18th hole, but Svahn made par while Rudolf bogeyed for a 2-0 Bobcat lead.
Shortly after Rudolf and Svahn concluded play, Texas State's Hailey Jones clinched the win with a 3&2 decision over Leiu Yuenyong. At the time, Puneet Bajwa and Yvonne Chamness were tied through 15 holes while Lucia Gonzalez was 2 Up on Carla Bordeaux through 15 holes.
"We want to say thank you to our three senior for all they have accomplished and contributed to our University," added Kane. "We wish them the best of luck after graduation!"
