NORFOLK, Va. – Postseason accolades continue to roll in for Old Dominion Baseball as Matt Coutney and Andy Garriola earned second-team All-America honors by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). It is the first time in program history ODU has placed two players on the NCBWA All-American squad.

Coutney hit .376 on the season with a single-season school record 27 homers, which ranks third in the country. He added 18 doubles, scored 66 runs and drove in 70 on the year. He ranks third in the country with 185 total bases and his .808 slugging percentage is sixth in the nation.

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Coutney led the Monarchs with 30 multi-hit games, including seven games with three or more hits. He also registered 19 multi-RBI games. He tied an ODU record when he homered in five-consecutive games in the middle of the season against Virginia, all three games against UAB and William & Mary. He hit seven homers in those five games. With his power binge this season Coutney finished his ODU career with 39 homers, second most in program history behind teammate Andy Garriola.

Coutney was named the Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Month for April. In 17 games, he had a batting average of .455 and hit 14 home runs with 28 RBIs. He registered 30 hits and scored 26 runs, while slugging at 1.152 with an on-base percentage of .543.

In addition to Coutney's tear in April, beginning on March 18, Coutney went on a 28-game stretch where he hit 21 home runs, drove in 41 runs, while hitting .414 and scored 39 runs. He tied the school record by hitting a home run in five-straight games, and hit seven homers during that stretch by hitting a pair of blasts in wins at UAB and William & Mary.

Garriola hit .322 on the year with 25 home runs and 80 RBIs, along with 18 doubles. He ranks seventh in the country in RBIs and ninth in home runs.

A native of Sierra Madre, California, Garriola finished second on the Monarchs with 24 multi-hit games, including a team-high 10, three-hit games. He led the team with 21 multi-RBI games. He delivered three games with five or more RBIs, including driving in eight in a 14-7 win at FIU. That day, Garriola went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers and a double.

While it took Coutney about a month to heat up, Garriola started the season on fire, embarking on a team-best 17-game hitting streak after going hitless in the season opener. Garriola hit nine homers and nine doubles during the streak, while hitting .375 and he drove in 27 runs.

He became just the third player in program history to record 80 or more RBIs in a season and the first to do it since Todd Azar set the single-season program record in 1986.

Garriola graduates ODU as the all-time home run king with 49 career blasts.
