Muguruza Leads Women’s Golf in First Round of Chattanooga Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Pilar Muguruza is tied for 17th at 2-over 74, and three Monarchs are tied at 4-over after 18 holes of the Chattanooga Classic. The Old Dominion women's golf team is one of four teams tied for sixth place.
 
Muguruza shot a 1-under 35 on the back nine, including three birdies in a five-hole stretch.
 
Jana Melichova, Federica Torre and Elsie Verhoeven are all tied for 35th at 76. Melichova birdied the second hole of the day but finished the front nine at 3-over 39. Torre collected 15 pars, tied for the most in the field. Verhoeven logged three birdies, four bogeys and one triple bogey.
 
Leah Onosato rounded out the Monarchs with a 77 and is tied for 47th. Her four birdies on Sunday were the third-most in the field.
 
ODU posted a 14-over-par score of 302 in the first round and is in a four-way tie for sixth, just four shots outside the top-five. The Monarchs are third in par-3 scoring (+5) and fourth with 55 total pars.
 
North Florida sits atop the team leaderboard at 294 (+6). Yale is in second at 296, and UTSA and East Carolina are tied for third one shot behind the Bulldogs.
 
Ana Gonzalez (UTSA), Julie Boysen Hillestad (East Carolina) and Esme Hamilton (Chattanooga) are in a three-way tie for first after shooting 2-under 70. Letizia Bagnoli (Florida Atlantic) and Ashley Au (Yale) carded 71s to round out the top-five.
