SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Kaijun Ma tied for 17th with a one-over par 217 as the Monarchs closed out the final round of the Babygrande Golf Donald Ross Collegiate on Tuesday. George Mason hosted the two-day tournament at Mid Pines Golf Club.

“Another disappointing tournament for the Monarchs,” said ODU Head Coach Murray Rudisill. “We thought the guys were ready to play this week, but we showed how inconsistent we are in that none of the five players had three good rounds.”

“We feel like the problems are mental toughness and not a lack of ability and that is what makes it so frustrating for the coaches. The guys just don’t have confidence in their ability to perform when it comes to the pressure of a tournament situation.”

The Monarchs finished 13th as a team with a combined 29-over par 893. Chattanooga went 25-under with an 839 to finish atop the team leaderboard. GMU was also under par and took second place with a 2-under 862, and Seton Hall came in third with a 3-over 867.

Ma got off to a strong start on Monday, carding a 3-under par 69 in the morning and a one-under 71 in the afternoon. The junior from Macau, China rounded out the tournament with a final round of 77 on Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 217 (+1).

Philip Minnehan posted an even 72 for his first round, but added scores of 78 and 74 to finish tied for 50th at 224 (+8). Cullen Campbell shot a 13-over 229 to tie for 66th and Jacob Gunther was one stroke behind him and tied for 71st with a 230 (+14). Jakub Sutor rounded out ODU’s scores with a 231 (+15), tying him for 76th.

ODU will head down to Greenville, North Carolina next week to play in the East Carolina Invitational. The Pirates are hosting the two-day tournament at Brook Valley Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, March 17-18.

“We only have a couple of days off before we head to East Carolina for another event this coming weekend. Hopefully things will come together there,” added Rudisill.
