NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion’s women’s tennis dropped their contest against No. 19 NC State by a 5-2 score.
“Hats off to NC State on their hard fought victory,” Head Coach Dominic said. “Overall the loss feels tough, but I saw us playing gritty Old Dominion-style tennis. I thought we did a good job having a tournament-esque push in the singles. It’s good to see that out of a team in early February. Each match so far this season we have gotten better.”
The Wolfpack’s Gabrielle Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo were victorious at No. 1 doubles over Sofia Johnson and Lidiia Rasskouskaia (6-2), with teammates Kristina Paskauskas and Michaela Laki besting Monarchs Marina Markina and Kira Matushkina (6-4), giving NC State the point. Ulyana Romanova’s and Victoria Matasova’s match against Anna Zyryanova and Mia Slama was suspended (3-4).
At No. 3 singles, Rasskouskaia grabbed ODU’s first point of the match with a win over Zyryanova (6-4, 6-0), and the Monarchs would briefly take the lead after No. 2 Matushkina defeated Zampardo (6-1, 6-3). However, NC State’s No. 4 singles player Broadfoot would best Romanova (6-2, 6-4) and at No. 1 Laki gave Johnson her first loss in a singles match this season (6-3, 6-3), securing the Wolfpack’s win. At No. 5 Matasova and No. 6 Markina would continue their matches, though both would fall to their respective opponents Paskauskas (3-6, 5-7) and Slama (4-6, 3-6).
ODU will return home on Feb. 14 to take on another P4 opponent, Kansas, at 12 p.m in the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
