KNOXVILLE, TN - The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame's induction classof 2002 will include Marianne Stanley who coached Old Dominion University tothree National Championships and compiled a 269-59 record in ten years, from 1977-1987.
Stanley will be inducted April 26-27 at the Women's Basketball Hall of Famein Knoxville, TN. She will be joined by Cindy Brogdon, Kamie Ethridge, MargaretSexton Gleaves, hortencia de Fatima Marcari Oliva, Sandra Meadows, Lea Plarski,and Tara Vanderveer.
Stanley came to Old Dominion University after a stellar playing career atImmaculata where she garnered All-American honors in 1975 and 1976 after leadingthe Mighty Macs to AIAW National Championships both years.
She won 30 or more games her first three years at Old Dominion. After winningthe WNIT title in 1978, the Lady Monarchs rolled to 35-1 and 37-1 records in winningthe AIAW National Championships. In 1985, she led the Lady Monarchs to a 31-3record and captured the NCAA title in Austin, TX. Her teams also appeared in the1981 AIAW Final Four and the 1983 NCAA Final Four, the latter held at Norfolk'sScope.
Players have thrived under her tutelage, with athletes earning National Player ofthe Year honors three times - Nancy Lieberman in 1979 and 1980 and Anne Donovan in 1983. She coached ten Kodak All-Americans and two GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in Donovan (1982 & 83), and Cris Critelli (1980).
Stanley has a great deal of experience coaching at the national team level as well,with a record of 47-13 with ten different U.S. teams. Included in that record are goldmedals as an assistant coach at the 1993 World Championships in Brazil, the 1986 Goodwill Games in Russia and the 1986 World Championships in Russia.
After leaving Old Dominion in 1987, Stanley also coached at Penn, Southern California, Stanford and California-Berkeley. Her 1992 USC team reached the NCAA Elite eight. She was inducted into the Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. Stanley earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from Immaculata.
